They didn't make it when I had my 3500S, so I never got to try it - I was using LRP, well - anything. That car I got to enjoy during the 'fuel crisis' whilst all the silly people in diesels were sitting stranded, I was wafting around at 13mpg with a tank full of LRP.

Most UK cars of the '50s through to '80s were designed for at least 4 Star, ie 98 or so octane. So even if ok with unleaded will need the same octane rating.
Dunno what Beetles were designed for.
Even with a knock sensor, the car may be optimised for 95, so increasing it may have no benefit.
BP had Super Unleaded in the early '80s - at around 98 octane. I used it in my P6 3500S - just for the hell of it, as leaded 4 star was still available then. But it made the fuel evaporation problems even worse in hot weather.

My previous car (a BMW 320i) ran noticably better on Optimax - and returned (approx) 10% better fuel economy. I left the on-board computer's "Consumption 2" figure alone - so it told me what my consumption had been over the whole time I owned the car - and it started creeping up after a few days - not bad given it was an average over a couple of years.
I can't put a figure on the extra performance (although it was noticable) - but the 10% better fuel economy was real and measurable.
So I ran it with Optimax - it cost about the same (lower fuel consumption, more expensive fuel) and went better.
