Changes at DVLA - tell them what you think

Having been looking for certain information on the DVLA website, I stumbledacross the following consultation document regarding changes to the DVLA feestructure: own concern is with the "Annual Registration Fee", worst case proposedwould cost £4.50 per vehicle, per year simply to maintain it's registrationon the DVLA computer. And of course once the fee structure is in place, howdo we prevent future increases?To those who can't be bothered with reading the whole document there is asummary of the propsed fees here: this concerns you, tell the DVLA - you have until November the 5th to beheard,Cheers,Bill.

In a hard water area, the lead pipes get coated on the inside, and this prevents any lead getting into the water.

And in a soft water area, most measurements show the lead to be at acceptable levels.

I replaced a lot of lead piping in my parents house in Aberdeen - to modernise the system. Aberdeen is a very soft water area - the local stone being granite. Cutting open the pipes revealed the original extrusion or whatever markings. If the water had dissolved the lead, then it can't have been by much, even over 50 years or so.

Just what evidence is there that lead from car emissions is ingested, or that if it is, that it is any more harmful that the combustion products of unleaded petrol?

When it somes to CO2 I suspect that the effects of forest fires, deforestation for logging etc, wars and their consequences (e.g. setting fire to oil wells) might have a greater environmental impact than the combustion of fossil fuels for transport.

It has been disputed in the past that the lead levels found in children were primarily at least from lead in petrol and Dave has suggested that lead pipes are not as bad as they have been made out to be. Coincidentally there was a short article in the Independent today (Tuesday) on the continuing peril from lead in paints which claimed (surprising me) that lead in paint was not banned till the late 80s.

The government offer a grant for the replacement of lead pipes. However, to qualify, you have to pay for a water analysis showing it's necessary - and that's not refundable if it's ok. A friend in a soft water area with a particularly long incoming lead main did just this, and it was found to be ok. He didn't believe this and had a second analysis done. Still ok. I'd like to know how many grants have actually been paid.
