I'm with you there, though if the distributer is worn, then replacing the points with a magnetic or optical setup must reduce the effect of that wear by a useful degree..

You're trying to talk me back into the EDIS based system again aren't you? Well I'm not listening! In case you didn't read the link, it uses a trigger wheel on the camshaft pulley, a lambda sensor screwed into the inlet manifold, Ford coil pack and EDIS module to distribute the spark and a mappable control unit programmable from a laptop to tell it when. Not really one for the purists!

You mean a M.A.P. sensor screwed into the inlet manifold don't you? (My Megajolt does anyway!)

I probably do, are they different? It's taking me a while to get to grips with all this newfangled stuff.

Ah, someone who's already using this system. If you have a minute and the inclination, I'd love to hear more.

I've got a couple of the Megajolt light-junior boards, one which I've built up. I've bought a couple of EDIS-4 units+sensors+coil packs off Ebay, and everything seems to work OK, using a trigger wheel mounted in a drill. I need a couple of the proper Ford trigger wheels to fit the crank pulleys. When the spring comes I'll be fitting one unit to my Domino (GRP Mini) and the other to my Clan Crusader. (Hillman Imp engine).

It looks as if I may have to buy the proper trigger wheels from one of the USA suppliers, as most EDIS-4 cars over here seem to use holes in the flywheel as the timing source.

The MAP sensor (Manifold Absolute Pressure) senses the vacuum (or rather the absolute pressure) in the manifold and uses that as the source, together with the engine RPM to compute the required ignition advance.
