I am working on the above car and can't get the starter to work. As the voltages are OK when the switch is operated, my feeling is that either the solenoid isn't engaging the starter or the starter is siezed. The problem is that the top mounting bolt, inserted from the gearbox side, is relatively inaccessible and has previously been partially rounded off by someone. I would be grateful for suggestions as to, either how to get the starter off without removing the engine and box in one lump, or anyone's experience as to the practicality of removing the manifold for access and then stripping the starter without removing it.
Is it possible to strip XJS 3.6, manual, starter in situ ?

No actual experience of those, but has it an externally mounted solenoid? Ie, a pre-engage type? These often give trouble, but can usually be removed with the starter in place. Cleaning the solenoid armature can sometimes sort things - although if the plating has gone and it's rusty this might be a short term fix.
