Jaguar E-type 4.2 but what series?

May 02, 2007 4 Replies

Guys,

I recently found a Jaguar e-type that I would like to buy ... but what series is it?

I do not want to contact the owner before knowing exactly what is it and being able to make a reasonable offer.

Here are the pictures, not very good but should be enough. My guess is that it is the 4.2 Series 2 OR 1.5 but I am not sure... three windshield wipers, no cover on the headlights but quite small front "mouth", latches for the hood are inside... btw, can the hood be removed to make a convertible?

TIA, it would be a dream to buy it!!! j

In news: snipped-for-privacy@h2g2000hsg.googlegroups.com, Jony wittered on forthwith;

Looks like a Series 1.5 to me, and it is a convertible, just with the hard top fitted.

It's the so-called Series One-and-a-Half, a typical Jaguar parts bin leftovers job while they were developing the Series Two, which makes it

1967-68. No two were the same.

I guess you are not from the UK, so not being patronising if we use different words, but that's not a "hood" - it's a detachable hardtop, and the cloth hood should be inside. Quite easy job to unlatch it and lift it off, although two people required.....

If you do buy it, tell me how much you want for the hard top - I've been after one for ages!

Impossible to put a price on it without much more information. A good one is a joy to own, a bad one will bankrupt you and break your heart.

Good luck, and keep us posted.

You're considering buying it on the strength of *those* photos?

One born every minute.

Hi Geoff,

thanks a lot for your answer, now I understand why I could not fit in either series I or II specs, I see that these models are really unique.

I am trying hard to buy the car but the owner is not very convinced about selling in the meantime the "E" is deteriorating.. . what a mistake.

Thanks again for your help J
