Opel Kadett - Insurance

Hi all,

I have been offered a 1972 Opel Kadett and am trying to get a quote for insurance. I have Googled and most of the companies specifiy that in order to qualify for classic insurance, the vehicle would have to be kept either in a garage or on a driveway, neither of which are possible where I live. Is this a standard condition of classic insurance?

If not, does anyone know of an insurance company who *doesn't* require this? I have tried most of the big name insurance companies as well as some of the classic insurance specialists and am begining to think that I just won't get insurance due to my circumstances. Please help as I *really* want the car!

Try Roadsure.

Footman James have insured my Triumph knowing it will be parked on a public road. But they wanted to know that it wasn't the only car I own.

They might be worth a call - particularly if the Opel isn't your only car.

Norton don't require the car to be kept off-road, but the premium does go up (quite a bit). However, if you've got a car >30 years old and don't have a driveway then there's not a lot of choice around. That said, Norton sem to be pretty good, and they bundle Green Flag rescue with the insurance.

Unfortunately the Kadett will be my only car (or would be in I could get a quote for insurance).

Thanks to everyone who replied, I am off to try Roadsure and Norton now. Thanks again

I'd give CIS a call, we've found them cheaper and more flexible than specific classic places on a variety of cars.

I've never found it so. None of my classics are garaged except whichever one I'm working on at the time (the garage isn't big enough!)

I've used both Footman James and Firebond.

The problem isn't with lack-of-garage, it's with lack-of-off-road-parking. If you don't have a driveway/yard/whatever then a lot of companies won't touch you for classic insurance on an only car. I've have "no" from Footman James and Firebond on this one - the flying breadvan lives in a lay-by at the end of the village, so that although it's off the road it's not on land I own (council land) - so the insurance companies say no cover. Norton don't, but they charge for it. I may investigate Roadsure come november, just to see how they compare.

Roadsure, in my case, is a non-starter as a) the car has to be worth between £1,000 and £20,000 (which I don't think the Kadett is, and b) it cannot be your only car, they will only insure it as a 2nd car. Ho hum! Norton ARE doing me a quote though so I will have to wait and see how that comes out.

Well, that rules them out for me, too - the scimitar does just fine as a only car and I see no reason to have extra ironmongery cluttering the place up..

Good luck with it. They're not marvellously cheap if you've not got off-road parking, but the service is good (and the free recovery is nice to have). Never had to put them to the test on claims, though, and hope it won't ever arise.
