Slightly OT. Private Insurance For Vans

Hi

Im looking to buy a van, probably something like a new Combo, I am not currently Self-Employed, and mainly wish to use it as a car, but with extra loading space.

All the insurance companies I have contacted don't seem to know what to do with me, Confused.com van insurance gets so far along then asks, "how long have you been self-employed*

Does anyone else run a van for personal use and who insures it?

Surely you don't have to set up a sleeper company?

Kind Regards

In 50 years driving I've had vans (taxed and insured as 'Private') on many occasions, and have never had the slightest difficulty in getting insurance. At present I've a Transit. When I was last looking for competitive insurance a farmer friend pointed me towards the NFU Mutual, and I've been happy with them for several years. (I'm not a farmer, BTW).

But i'll certainly give the NFU a try, many thanks.

Most insurance companies do get confused as to why somebody would want a van for private use. I found Co-op Insurance Services to be one of the few that will quote for private van use and like DB said, NFU also understand the problem.

The last time I encountered this it was cheaper to insure it for commercial use & SDP as well than just SDP.

We were somewhere around Barstow, on the edge of the desert, when the drugs began to take hold. I remember "Tom Burton" saying something like:

Norwich Union used to cover my van for private use only, but that was yonks back. Somebody else asked this last year and they confirmed that NU still offer private cover.
