Like everyone else I suspect the wheel bearing -- should get worse when the wheel concerned is the outer wheel which loaded up when cornering

Are there any marks at the top (or bottom) of the brake back plate to show that the brake drum has been rubbing on it? Used to get this many years ago on another make of car with irs and drum brakes. Surprising how many race scrutineers never checked the hand brake was off before they tried for play in the rear hub bearings.

Hi Jim, The symptoms still sound like a UJ, particularly the power-off cornering scenario. While there was no play in the outboard UJ, did you feel for any roughness in it's movement? Cheers, Bill.

These, I think ,have a double tappered race bearings on each side. and if so will load and unload as weight is applied when cornering. ( like having a front wheel bearing go.)

I hadn't thought of that, but you are right, there isn't much clearance between the exhaust and the transmission.

Time to have a word with my local friendly garage and see if they will let me put it on their hoist rather than struggling with ramps and axle stands....
