? on changing out fuel transfer pump on 2001 CTD

Mar 12, 2008 2 Replies

Never done this before, and read the procedure in a factory manual. As part of their procedure, they show removing the starter first. Their verbiage makes it sound like the reason for that is just to catch the fuel spill. Is starter removal really necessary? Thanks, Bill

If it is like a 2000 and you are talking about the lift pump, no.

Not at all. With all the road spray that coats the starter, a little diesel fuel isn't going to hurt it a bit. Do make sure you disconnect both batteries' negative cables, since you will be working with metal tools in close proximity to the starter.
