1992 EB Ford Explorer Head Unit Installation Problems

Sep 07, 2006 2 Replies

Trying to install an aftermarket HU into this beastly vehicle and having the toughest time.

Got it out relatively alright but i bought a wiring adapter labeled for

91-97 explorers and it fits on to the larger male end but not to the smaller male end that only has one(visible) large wire connected to it. A problem i unfortunately did not anticipate.

Could it be specially for the EB edition?

hope somebody knows, thanks for reading.

Not all units will fit, bracket in dash in the way

You have a radio cassette and try to install a cd/radio/cassette and that will not work

There were three levels of radio, only the lowest level is easily traded out for a new HU. Both the others used remote amplifiers and have different radio connections. Assuming that's what's happening in your case you will need to get a gizmo that reduces the speaker level output from your new HU down to amplifier input level. I did that on one 92 and while it worked I was never really happy with the setup as it always seemed slightly distorted and even with the gizmo set to max output level it didn't have enough output, not even as much as the original radio. If your original HU had the "flipper" volume switch it has a remote amp.
