I recently changed over to Warn manual hubs and restored 4WD capability on my '94 Exploder. While I can see how the Warns work, I'm wondering how the automatics did it. I assume it has to do with the plastic gizmo I threw away.

No big secret... the hubs would react to any condition that had the front driving axle spinning faster than the wheel. I'm sure that you would have thrown away more than just a plastic gizmo.....
Well, sure. I threw away the hub, bearing nut and key, as well as the plastic thingy. Just never wondered how they worked (or didn't, as it turned out) until I got rid of them. Wish I'd fooled with them until it became clear.

While the idea was good, the hubs were pretty much crap from the git-go....
Surprising but much of the stuff we see on our cars that appears complicated, is actually quite simple once we see the premise of their operation.
