Re: Alarm for 03 Explorer

Tims advice is solid.... I installed a new style "silver" in my '02 SuperCrew and retained all my factory PATS features including progressive unlock..... peace of mind for my loving bride when she ventures to the city...

The Code Alarm units are spendy, especially when we add the PATS module and install it properly (NO scotchloks) but the finished reulst is pretty decent. Bear in mind that vehicles with "all the toys" are extremely difficult to set up and program correctly.... someone that charges more but has a good track record is the guy you need.

Is Tim looking for just a security system to go with the Explorer or is he looking for a remote start system as well???

The standard Ford(CodeAlarm) security system retains the original RKE remotes, and runs about $240 installed.

The Gold flavor which adds the remote starter feature needs new remotes hence a higher price, but supposedly, according to my manual, you can still use your original RKE remotes to activate/cancel the security features. You just can't start the truck with the old ones. I've yet to get them to work with my Expy though. I'm probably missing something when attempting the reprogram. The PATS system integrity is also held in place since a key is not needed to be attached to the steering column to get the truck to start. There is now a $30.00 module from Ford that takes care of this. The main reason I went with a PowerCode system over the other brands out there. Plus it's cheaper than a 3rd key to boot.

No, I am not looking for a system, I was only using my experience with my system that is installed to assist someone...

I have the Gold security system with remote start. That statement is no where in my manual, and at least with my Gold package (unless they have updated it with far newer parts), it is not true. When I use my new key fobs to arm the system... if I take my original fobs and press the unlock button, it sets off the alarm. I questioned my dealer about that. He said that is normal, because they are two separate systems, and the new system does not recognize the old fobs any more, and they work at a different frequence too (which is also why I couldn't manually program them into the system and have them be recognized as well).

Ahhh... this must be why they neede both sets of my keys when they programmed the system. I asked why, and they said to program the remote start, they had to have both sets of original keys.

Directed Electronics makes an add on aftermarket alarm that works off your factory remotes, It's the Hornet 700T. We do tons of them for the local dealerships

Unless you have a manual(101825-8) from Ford dated 09-02 which lists "Featuring Powercode Technology" you might very well have the OLD Gold version system which was getting passed off as Powercode by some dealers for lack of knowledge of product on their part. That version did not interface with the RKE doorpad according to some posts I'd read on different truck forums recently. The powercode verson should work with the RKE keypad and factory fobs according to my manual. Hopefully it's just a case of you getting an outdated manual.

A quote from page 3 of my manual: Your powercorde system's security functions can be controlled using either the supplied powercode system remote transmitters or the vehicle's factory RKE keyfobs if equipped. Also note, that the powercode system, while integrated with the factory RKE system, does not alter the functionality of the factory RKE system in any way.

Directions for using either type keyfob are listed on page 3,4 for arming, disarming,

The PATS system integrity is>> also held in place since a key is not needed to be attached to the> steering column to get the truck to start. There is now a $30.00>> module from Ford that takes care of this.

Yes programming the module works the same way as if you were programming a 3rd key for a spare. The module contains a PATS transmitter inside without the actual need to buy a 3rd key which some aftermarket alarms still require.

Wow, that answers that. I guess I won't answer anymore in this thread :-( I'm out-dated. I have my Gold package installed 1 month after I bought my Explorer, so it was installed in mid November of 2001.... so I have an old system.

Wonder if they could use the existing sensors and such and install a new updated central unit in my vehicle..... hmmmm

That's exactly what I want to do. Use all the existing hardware that was left in my Explorer. When I picked it up at the dealer I watched the tech. He just reached under the dash and pulled the head end unit out. But all the rest of the stuff was left in place.
