Transfer case sensors

Ford dealer replaced "both" transfer case speed sensors a year ago. That's what the work order says. It's starting to shudder again when turning, as if it's in

4-high. In this newsgroup last year, Tom Amundsen said to "pull the sensors out (not too hard to get to), wipe off the metal sludge that is on them (they are magnetic) and you're good to go."

I had the vehicle on a friend's hoist today to clean the sensors. However, he and I could only locate one sensor on the transfer case, just to the right of the rear output shaft.

Can anyone tell me where the other sensor is located? The car is a 1997 Explorer Limited. Thanks.

Nope. Nothing as easy as that.

How do the tires look? Any uneven wear? I've read (here, no doubt) that if the tires are not all the same diameter it will cause it to think they are turning at different speeds (which I guess they will be) and cause it to go into 4H.

So far I have not had any 4WD problems with my '97 so please post your results so when the time comes....

ok, define shudder a little more

If it feels like staying in 4x4 , your front suspension will start to " bind up" on corners, not shudder
