XLT '99. Air con permanently on

May 27, 2006 3 Replies

I have a UK version Explorer XLT year '99. Appears air con is on permanently even when the rotary switch is elsewhere. Guessing it might be a stuck relay. Could that be it? If so where is it ( somewhere behind the glovebox??), and how do you get to it. If not anyone out there any ideas as to what might be causing it?? regards Mike Palastanga

The AC compressor clutch will cycle any time that air is directed towards glass. This is to reduce misting.....

Well, if you've checked ALL positions, including OFF and the AC is still on, then you probably have a switch problem.

AC is enabled in ALL positions except OFF, VENT, and FLOOR HEAT.

Double check that, first.

If the AC goes off in any of the above positions, then it's working properly. Then move on to:

-- if you have it in any position which enables the AC, but you don't have any temperature control -- say you move the temperature control to full hot, and the air stays cold -- then you probably have the "broken blend door" problem. If so, check the archives, there are directions for fixes.

Good luck, Alan
