2003 merc sable 3.0 duratec oi;?

Hi all... Is it necessary to use synthetic oil or blend in the duratec engines? Will regular 5-30 oil suffice if oil and filter changes are made at 3000 miles or less?

What does the owner's manual say?? If it says synthetic is REQUIRED, then you must use it. If it makes no mention of it, then just use the proper API rated oil (I believe SL is the current rating), at the proper viscosity range, and change it per the scheduled maintenance manual. A synthetic may help if your vehicle is used under extreme conditions, but for most uses, it's unnecessary and overpriced.

I am cerain a 2003 Duratec V-6 calls for 5W20 oil. Synthetic is not required as long as the oil you are using meets the correct Ford Spec (WSS-M2C153?H).

"SAE 5W-20 engine oil is recommended.

"Only use oils ?Certified For Gasoline Engines? by the American Petroleum Institute (API). Use Motorcraft or an equivalent oil meeting Ford Specification WSS-M2C153?H. SAE

5W-20 oil provides optimum fuel economy and durability performance meeting all requirements for your vehicle?s engine."

The following petroleum based oils all claim to meet the Ford requirements:

Mobil Drive Clean 5W20 Amsoil XL7500 5W20 PENNZOIL® MULTIGRADE MOTOR 5W20 Motorcraft SAE 5W-30 Super Premium Motor Oil Castrol GTX 5W20 Havoline 5W20 Quaker State 5W20

The list is far longer.....
