85 bronco2 can't hit accelerator

We've been at this for so long, forgive me if i forget something we did.

I got thie bronco2 85, 2.8, feedback carb, and it idles good. you hit the throttle, the engine makes this outboard motor sound, gas sprays up somewhat up out of the carburetor.

We're now looking at the engine itself malfunctioning. What should we look for?

We get myriad different codes running and not, we've played with egr, carb settings, the computer, the timing, distributor and rotor, all different sensors, map, eps, tps, ...

No matter what, it always does the same thing. That sound causes the motor to kind of die out, instant smoke, sputter, then if released, it idles again okay most times, sometimes dies out.

The carb is clean. One thing i can't understand is the float measurement. I don't understand what the book says about the .810 measurement in the float. i don't know how to measure that, from where to where. Other than that its looking the the engine itself, but i don't understand what.

The people we got the truck from aren't good at telling us what happened to cause this change. I'm only fixing this car because my taurus crapped out and they don't even make parts for it anymore aparently.

Just a swag... have you checked for an exhaust restriction?

Also, I'm unsure of what constitutes "idles fine".... sounds like a compression test may be in order.

I hadn't thought of an exsaust problem, that's the next thing we'll look at.

Any other ideas are greatly appreciated, its kind of a confusing problem.

Haha, sure enough, it seems to be a blocked cat. The reason i discounted it was that the exaust seemed to flow okay.

The timing chain idea was considered also.

Thanks so much everyone! This one was a poser for sure. At least we know there's a lot of good parts in there now...
