My daughter-in-law returned from a short trip with her kids, parked the wagon and went inside. When she came back out the engine compartment was on fire, everything completely destroyed. the fire department arrived and said they could not determine cause of fire. this was a 3.8 engine, and was maintained well. anyone have any ideas, or have a good engine for sale? thanks

you gonna need more than a new engine.. the wires(complete set (under hood), the the fuel system line(rubber) the plastic sending units, all rubber under the hood and the radiator as its plastic you probably gonna need that also... and what about the plastic fan for the radiaor and such... the a/c hoses the ones that flex(rubber or nylon) the master cylinder brake booster.... cant think of anything else for now.. let her contact her insurance company.. they probably gonna total it as it will cost more to fix that it is worth....
Probably oil dripping someplace, like on the exhaust pipe.

Car is totalled but you could sell the car, engine and trans for parts
In fact the core of the engine is probably okay.
It's everything else under the hood.
The problem was LIKELY a small fuel line leak, which would spray gas all over the underhood....
