shudder while braking

i have a 1996 ford escort lx swg w/ a/t, 1.9L engine, 220,000 miles i have had it from day 1 and have done all the regularly scheduled maintenance on it, w/o fail. it has run quite well, but now a problem has developed, as follows: when braking, right at the very moment when it comes to a complete halt, and only at the very end, there is a shudder that lasts for about one second. the shudder is NOT in either of the front wheels; it feels like it's coming from the engine/transmission. also, the problem is intermittent - it does not happen each and every time i brake. any ideas as to what's going one or what might be developing? tia

I think your transmission is not downshifting or is late or the converter lock-up is not unlocking. Have you been maintaining the transmission too?

yes, the transmission leaks, but i've been diligent in keeping it topped off - - if anything, there's too much fluid in it
