car shut off

Hello all, yesterday I was driving my 2005 Ford Focus ZX-5. All of a sudden it shut off. The fuel level was low, but I've seen it lower. But I put gas in it anyway. I went to start the car and it was as if the starter wasn't even installed. The key just turned. No noise at all.

The battery? That's what I thought but my radio turns on fine. The car seems normal despite the started not making any noise. I had a jump start, but that didn't change anything starter wise. If the starter goes could it just shut the car off?

Also, when I turn the car on (just the power not the engine) I see the digital odometer with just dashes. No numbers or blank like when it first starts up. Just "- - - -". Any ideas?

Do the lights work? I think it may be that you loose connections that provide enough power for the radio, but not enough for the starter or the electronics to run the computer. I would check the connections.

The lights work. Everything works except for the digital readout which is just minuses. And the car doesn't start, or crank, or make any noise at all when I turn the key. I was told last year that based on the voltages coming out from my starter that it was going to go soon. If the starter dies while the car is on does that turn it off???

I had a similar problem with my Ford Focus Sedan 2002. I read my Owners Manual and it told me to hit the re-set button on the front right passenger wheel well.

Well LA! Started right up!

Hi Chad,

I recently had to send the injectors from our Focus away for cleaning. Since then, the car was a bit reluctant to start, bear with me.

I decided to reset the *powertrain control module* so that it could learn new values as the quantities of injected fuel may be different than before.

Yesterday, I removed fuse number 9 in the fuse box behind the battery and turned on the ingition. After three seconds or so, the LCD in the instrument cluster went to all dashes, and the fuel pump did not energise. I did not try to start the car at the time, so I do not know if it would have energised the starter motor.

But the fact the fuel pump did not energise and the display all reading dashes points to your symptom. If the fuel pump stops, the engine - if the car is being driven - will die almost immediately.

Hope this gives you somewhere to start.

Best wishes

r at the time,

iven - will die

So far it looks as if the electronic control unit malfunctioned. The fuses look good. The fuel pump switch wasn't the problem either. The ground cables on the battery are fine. I find out for sure tomorrow from my mechanic.

Disconnecting the battery for a few minutes may/will reboot the electronics. The car may run rougher than normal for a few miles afterwards as it re-learns the system.

Do you know this to be the procedure ? I ask because another car I had needed the ingintion turned on for 5 seconds, off for 5 seconds and then back on for 5 seconds and then to start the engine to raise the coolant temperature to 85 degrees C, then to select drive for 10 seconds.

The pulling of fuse 9 and then turning on the ignition is mentioned somewhere in the TIS, but it did not seem to do the trick. It did run really sweet afterwards, but is still hesitant to start.

Best of luck Chad

Right, I was barking up the wrong tree....

Re-setting the Powertrain Control Module is as follows (not word for word):

Obtain and record the audio unit keycode.

Disconnect the battery, (negative terminal) but it does not state for how long. I left it for 20 mins.

Re-connect the battery.

Start the engine and run at idle for 3 mins.

When normal operating temp is reached (mine took longer than 3 mins), increase revs and hold at 1,200 rpm for 2 mins.

Go for a drive for about 5 miles / 8 kms of variable speeds and traffic.

HTH

ps. It also says (not word for word):

When the battery is disconnected and reconnected, some odd drive symptoms may occur while the vehicle acquires its operating values. The vehicle may need to be driven 16 kms / 10 miles or more to derive the data.

Take your pick....
