When starting the car a grating sound is sometimes heard from under the bonnet any ideas ?.

You need to give more info. How old is the car? Does the engine turn when the sound happens? It could be just a vibration, but alternately a broken tooth on the flywheel, which requires pulling the transmission (a day's work in a dealer or specialized transmission shop). Only a mechanic can tell for sure.
