You still have your owner's manual? It'll tell you in plain language what the towing capacity is with your engine, transmission, and gear ratio combination.

What gear ratio in the differential? It makes a big difference.

ever consider a pop up trailer?

It is more a matter of final drive ratio in rear axle than the "chug a lug" tranny. If your rear axle ratio is around 3.55 or taller with a OD and that 4.9, it will not tow well but it you gear it up to 4.10 or so it will do a good bit better. It will not be a barn stormer but it should do okay up to 5000lbs or so with deeper gears (if you want to go through the trouble of changing them) otherwise I would limit myself to popup campers as it sits now.

The trouble is that some of the owners manual tow ratings are more dream than reality as they do not really factor in wind drag from big cross sectional trailers nor hilly terrain or whether for highway speeds too. A 4.9 with automatic and stock gearing is going to be a marginal tower at best. There is not much reserve power in that truck for towing as it sits.

Probaly a lot more familar with transmisson and gear limitations than you think! I actually have a working 83 AOD in the barn right now. (pull from a vehical I junked out)

I notice you've posted your 'knowledge' to all the truck groups the last few days, including that howler about the 'slug of freon or oil' in the evaporator of a GM AC ..............
