"Custom Build Fee"?

I've had somebody looking for a used F150 for over four months now with no hits. The close ones were around $21,000-$22,000.

New prices on the config I want look tb around $31,000 and I'm starting to think in terms of a new vehicle.

But the config I want just isn't available pre-built in the area in the colors I would accept. (FWIW: White, 6.5' bed, full crew cab, 40-20-40 seats, V8, steering column shift, 4wd, and a few other things.

The Questions:

---------------------------------------------------------------

1) Is it usual for a dealer to charge extra for a custom build? If so, how much?

2) When does the window close for custom builds on 2011 F150's?

No there is no fee for a custom build, however you may not get as good a deal as you would for one off the lot. Builds for 2011 models are already done. Anything now would be for a

2012. Ypou can look at dealers farther away, using the following site. Look at dealers more than 50 miles away from your area. A local dealer will then do a deal with the distant dealer for the vehicle. Just take in a copy o9f the window sticker.

I don't know the answer to your question, but I do have a comment on the specs you have for the seat.

I think the seat you want is actually termed 40/60, where 40 is the driver seat, and 60 is the passenger seat and intergrated arm rest/center seat. I believe the seat you are asking about says that the driver and passenger seat move independently of the center seat/arm rest. I think that if you changed the descriptin of yoru specification for seating, you might find the truck you want. White should not be a problem. Full Crew should not be a problem. The engine should not be a problem, nor should column shift. The only show stopper I see you your list is the seat configuration, and if you take the seats as they come then you should be able to find your truck without any other compromise. The white exterior should give you either a tan or charcoal interior. I don't know all of the colors, and you did not specify your desired combination.

You should be able to find your truck and build it on Ford.com using the option lists they have there. I don't think you can build a 2011 anymore. This is October, and they are into 2012 production by now.

Per snipped-for-privacy@verizon.SPAMDAM.net:

The local guy had a few close matches within a couple hundred miles - maybe even close enough.

But they get the cars from dealer-to-dealer by hiring people to drive them. The idea of some total stranger driving a brand-new (i.e. not broken in yet) engine 100+ miles bothered me. If it turned out tb an oil burner or had some mysterioso problem with the engine later on I'd always be kicking myself for getting into that situation in the first place.

I have purchased more than one vehicle that way. Usually they have one of their employees drive it or to flatbed haul it. As far as problems, it would be under warranty. To me not even a consideration as far as who is driving it.

Current vehicles (04 up) are 40/230/40. The seats are exactly the same other than features like power etc. The 20 is either a seat or a console.

I have to agree with that. I bought a car , not a ford, and the dealer wanted me to pay $200 to deliver it to their lot. Even if I didn't buy it. I'm sure they were going to pay their car washer or other dealer employees to drive it. I asked them what happens if he drives it off the road or wrecks it. He said its all covered under warranty. I passed and found the car myself. 90 miles away $1500 cheaper , and went and got it. My dealer had marked it up.

Not true. My 2010 F-150 has a 40/20/40 seat. The center has a console that can be flipped up to create a center seat.

My '97 has the same seat, I just thought it was called a 40/60, not a

40/20/40. It's all semantics. If the OP is asking for something that is called something else, and the something else is not available because it was referred to incorrectly, then renaming the specification he has might result in more hits, and he ends up with what he wants.
