Probably because it's going into the freestar and with the mods made it won't work in the F150 (just a guess)
Plus, the fuel savings wasn't very much when compared to the 4.6LV8. With the auto trans, I think the V8 did better in the EPA tests.

Bummer. We have a 4.2 in the 98 F150 short-wide and I like that engine. At fwy speeds my wife consitently nets 18 MPG. I'd definitely call it comperable to GM's venerable 4.3 V6 which is an excellent engine. I can't help but wonder how the 4.2 stacks up against the 4.6 in the HP/Ft. Lbs. dept...? I also wonder what the marketing genius' at FoMoCo could be thinking....

probably not the marketing geniuses doing the thinking, Probably the bean counters. It would be cheaper to produce the same vehicle with less engine options I would expect.
Besides, the MPG is very close between the 4.2 and 4.6 and the v8 has more HP and torque.
Plus V8's just sound better IMHO. Vrooommmmmmmmmmmm!
