Has anyone had this problem?

First, I searched the archives here and couldn't find anything related so if I missed, I'll stand for the lashing.

I have an old 84 F250 that I use mostly just to run around the farm and back and forth to the feed store and lumber yard.

I went to start it up a couple of days ago and the key just went round and round so to speak. So, I installed a new ignition lock. Still wouldn't reach to start position. So, I installed a new ignition switch. Still wouldn't reach the start position. So, I removed the turn signal stuff and discovered that the rod that goes down to the ignition is attatched to what looks like a small piece of cast something and that piece has broken. So, my question is, how do you get that little sucker out? I'm assuming I have to remove the top hub of the tilt wheel, but I see no rhyme or reason or anything else that would indicate how to remove it.

Thanks,

Yep, I've had that problem.

You have to pull the steering wheel to get to that actuator rod. I'm just a DIY'er, but I was able to fix the problem in a 1988 E350 van in an hour or two. Just remember how everything came out so you can put it back together, and be glad you don't have to fight with an airbag.

You missed it. <G> I already have the steering wheel off, and the turn signal mechanism off. What I need to get off is what's left after all that is removed because the actuator rod is attached to something that is attached to the housing somehow. I wish I knew where I could go online and find a picture of an 84 F250 steering column.

I'm going on 2 year old memory, so I'm a little fuzzy. I know the lock cylinder had to come out. I think I had to remove the collar where the shift lever is because I remember that I broke the pointer :-)

You can try

for a diagram. They have a lot of good diagrams in their repair guide section.

I tend to be a bit lazy at times, and cheap all the time. 20 year old !984 ford farm truck, nothing wrong with that, probably showing its age, its a work horse. The two easiest ways to fix it, replace the column with a used one, probably less than $30 if you got a u-pull-it kinda place,or if the steering lock mech is working(meaning it will unlock), hit your local Advanced/Discount/Autozone parts house and get an old fashioned keyed ignition switch for the dash. cost about $12.

Hey, thanks. Another good idea.

Thanks, that's a good idea. It's that collar that I need to get off but I don't see any way to do it.

Five dollars to a donut says you have a tilt wheel. Right? You have to pull the pivot pins for the tilt. You can screw a machine screw into them and pry them out with a pair of needle nose pliers and a screwdriver. THEN you can get to the piece you're talking about. Ford calls it an actuator. Be sure to lube everythin up good when you go back together. It's not a particularly fun job, as a matter of fact it's kind of a pain.

Yes, you are correct. But, where are those pivot pins, inside where the turn signal mechanism is, or outside somewhere? I can't see anything that would lead me to believe removing them would allow me to take that housing off. Also, someone said this was dangerous. How so?

And, thanks for your response.
