Been truck shopping and ran across an '85 F-250 which seems pretty good for the price but I know nothing about the engine...
Is there anything I should know about 6.9L diesels before I buy one?

I have an 88 F250 with the 7.3 diesel which is similar, youré not getting a powerplant with these motors when hauling loads, empty they're pretty good, average 18-25 mpg, alot cheaper for parts than the newer powerstrokes, ex. injectors approx $35 compared in the $100's, one good thing is that alot of the older school buses around ( if you can find any) has the 6.9l from I believe from 1985 and under , which is the same moter except for the intake manifold set-up. I purchased one for a spare and have it sitting in the garage in case I have a meltdown with my 7.3. Hope this info is a little help to you.
I don't put major miles on it per year, I usually change the oil in spring and fall (15/30 spring, 10/30 fall ) and I seem to add 3-4 litres between changes, I should add that mine has 368 k on it. No valve noise to speak of.....KNOCK ON WOOD! lol.One thing I will mention to you that many probably do not know to check for when having a diesel, get the Ph level checked in your anti-freeze coolant. If this is too acidic over time it can eventually eat a hole through your cylinder walls and cause you a huge rebuild bill.Go to any heavy truck shop and they should know what i'm talking about and it's only a $4.00 bottle of additive to fix it.
