You'd need to hook up a GM-compatible OBD II scan tool to have much idea why it's on..

The check engine light comes on when the computer detects a problem, when this happens a code will be stored in the computer telling what the error was. Trying to diagnose the problem without the code is very difficult. So, you need to get the code read. Go to your local Autozone parts house and they will read it for free. Other parts places may read it for free, also. Or you can take the car to a shop and pay a mechanic to pull the codes. Once you have the code you can find out what it means, and start looking there.
