2002 Alero, any issues I should look for before warranty expires?

My wife's car is a 2002 Alero GL 2dr with the 4 cylinder.

Warranty expires in about 2500 km and would like to give it a good once over before then.

Does anyone have a list of common problems with this model to look for or, better yet, a list of items a DIY'er should look for on all cars?

Thanks,

Jason

Didn't these have that problem with the engine gaskets on certain engine models?? Check here to see if your vehicle is affected. It has a link to the GM service bulletin.

Thanks for the reply. Our Alero has the 4 cyl. Ecotec engine, not affected by this problem. I had my dealership's technician do their 57 point (drivetrain, suspension, brakes) inspection and they reported no issues other than dry upper strut mounts resulting in excessive noise. This corresponds to my observations (which I was withholding to see what they said after the inspection). They lubricated the mounts and gave everything else a clean bill of health. For $69 (CDN) including an oil and lube job, tire rotation, and top up all fluids, it gave me a little piece of mind.

Once I got home, I put the car up on stands and took a good look around all the hoses, seals, axles, suspension, etc. for any visible fluids, leaks, dampness and did not find anything. So, I am reasonable satisfied that everything is OK and the warranty will problem expire in the next 4-6 weeks.

If anyone has other ideas, I would be glad to hear them.

Ever consider an extended warranty? We bought one 20,000 miles ago on our '99 Venture minivan, and it has already paid for itself ($800) due to leaking intake manifold gaskets (a $600 job on a 3400 V6 minivan engine) and other sundry repairs. We still have 30,000 miles left on the warranty (good until 100,000 miles). We'll probably keep the van until the warranty expires, then sell it.
