Expansion joint?

My sister's '94 Cutlass Ciera S with 4-cylinder engine appears to have a mesh expansion joint in the exhaust pipe about halfway between the engine and the catalytic converter. It's leaking badly.

Looks like it's welded in. Should it be replaced in kind or can a piece of straight pipe be installed in its place (hopefully with clamps)?

That is a flex connection. Without it in there you will probably break the pipe in short order.

Take it to an exhaust shop and they can replace it.

Found several universal replacements for this joint in the back of my favorite NAPA store's exhaust parts book. Need to take some measurements now to figure out which one to order.

BTW, those exhaust shops charge money for doing this kind of work don't they? ;-)

Not always, You bring in your car and a big plate of cookies for the boys and offer that plate instead of $$$ for work done to your car and see how long it takes till you get a size 12 steel toe boot planted on your behind.

FYI - Expect to deal with a lot of RUST in the face & eyes if you do it yourself.
