how difficult is this to do? Is the pump internal or external? any info would help

------------------------------------------------------- The pump is internal -- at least on the 4.3 V6. You need to remove the oil pan.

Yes the hardest part is removing the oil pan and have the chassis clearance to do so. Once the pan is off, it is a 5 minute job to swap out the pump.
