Symptoms of Bad Wiper Motor

Hi,

The wiper motor on my 85 Chevy Caprice makes a squealing sound on "High", and once I even saw smoke coming from it, when on the "High" setting. The wipers move more slowly than usual also. Is this what happens when a wiper motor has gone bad ?

Is there some way to test it to verify the motor is bad, as opposed to just the circuit borad going bad? I just had to put in a new circuit board (it's in the washer pump) and I don't want to fry this one during my testing. Could a bad motor be causing the circuit board to go bad too?

Thanks

Take it off, take it apart, clean and lube everything (including grounds - as another poster said). Take all the wiper arms, levers, and pivots apart and do the same. Then put it all back together and hope for the best.

Do as Paulie suggested, but understand a 20 year old motor might be bad, especially if your seeing smoke.

Thanks, guys. I ended up getting a new wiper motor/circuit board/washerpump combo from AutoZone. Fixed the problem. The grounds were OK.

In a perfect world (where I would be rich) I would have had the time to clean everything and try that approach. :)
