Help with delay start issue.....

Hello all! Starting yesterday, when I start my 2007 Elantra....I turn the key, everything lights up as normal, I hear the fuel pump turn on.....then there are no other sounds for between 1-3 seconds. Then the car starts normally and runs normally. Any ideas???? Thank you!!!

I'm presuming you mean there's a 1-3 second delay prior to otherwise normal engine cranking.

These are the components in the starter circuit:

-- Start relay (in underhood junction box)

-- Starter

-- Ignition switch

-- Burglar alarm relay (behind dash on brace to left of heater box)

-- Range switch (on transmission)

-- Body Control Module (behind dash, underneath radio), which grounds burgl ar alarm relay.

A problem in any of them could be the issue. The only way to determine whi ch (without trial and error or a lucky find on an exploratory surgery) woul d be to check various parts of the circuit with the key in the start positi on while the engine won't crank.

Thank you! Yes, exactly....starts and runs normally after the delay.. I'm wondering....if it were any of the things you describe....would they show up on a code reader? I was starting to think it may have to do with the starter before your post, now I have more specific items to look at....so thanks.

And PS: Not really related to this situation, but I bought a new (2014) Elantra GT today. That will replace my 05 Elantra GT which I am giving to my son. I'm hoping my 07 (the current problem child) is just a small fix because it is in excellent shape and runs great normally.

Probably not.

Thanks again. I pulled the starter relay and "banged it around" a bit....and re-installed it yesterday. It did not seem to work, but today I started the car twice, both times totally normally. It freaks me out because I can't trust it, but at the same time...now I will look like I am nuts to my mechanic. He's a cool guy that I trust (he had been on vacation)....so I'll go talk to him tomorrow and see what he thinks.
