1995 XJS idle speed problem

I just purchased a 95 XJS convertible, and it idles rather fast, about 1200 RPM. It's not throwing any codes (no "Service Engine" lights are on) which I would expect if it was a bad idle control valve. The valve are rather pricey, is there some simple test I can do to verify it's correct (or incorrect) operation? Dan

This might point to a problem. Remove air filter(s), with engine up to normal temp and ticking over, check if any air is being sucked in through any other hole in the air filter casing other than the throttle, if there is then it could be the cold start or overrun valve is not closing properly leading to increased idle speed. Possibly :-) Ivar

Joe, I did as you suggest, and the RPM's drop very briefly about 50RPM, and then come right back up. Now, if I could only be sure I was looking at the idle speed control valve, I'd get my meter and test it. Dan

An excellent suggestion. I've noted that the air filter cannister is a bit loose, as it appears the plastic studs that mount it are broken. That may well point to a break somewhere else in the intake side. Dan
