1988 Jeep Wrangler

Well I want to keep the 4.2 liter I-6 stock cast iron exhaust manifold as it is, but I now need to replace the front pipe, the cat and from the cat back. I have been working with Quadratec but have not had any luck getting some questions answered.

First of all the gave me these part numbers.

front pipe --51403.04

cat --17611.09

installation kit -- 17611.55

cat back--17603.01

Now here is the kicker. On my jeep at the end of the front pipe where it connects to the cat there are flanges on each piece, both the front pipe and the cat. These flanges have a gasket between them and they are attached to a bracket that goes to the transmission mount. By looking at the cat and front pipe pictures at the

site you will see that they are not there. So the question is, did they make some modification on later jeeps and do away with these flanges, therefore just clamping the tubes together leaving the entire exhaust system only supported at the cast iron exhaust maifold and the hanger after the muffler?

Does anyone really know how to cure this issue?

Thanks

I'm getting down/front pipe and cat later today for my YJ also an 88, I'll let you know what mine looks like. FWIW I'm pretty sure there are "univesal" hangers that can be clamped on and would work as a substitute for the flang you're talking about. But I'm pretty sure the setup I ordered comes with the flanged/gasketed connection and not just a slip on connection.

It's kind of important; are you going for stainless or mandrel bent? Or do you just want to replace it and don't care? There are definitely way cheaper solutions if you don't care about (supposed) minor performance gains from the more expensive alternatives.

This never works... if you're asking in a news group you should plan to read here for the answers.

Well I wish I could get all stainless steel from the front pipe back but I have a feeling that I can only get that from the cat back. Since I have converted my 4.2 to Fi made by HESCO and sold by Quadratec I no longer need a cat with the air pump tube and I no longer need the nipple on the from pipe that use to go to the cat.

I have also asked HESCO for help on this matter to see if I can buy the entire bolt on no wleding required exhaust kit from them.

Any advice you have would be appreciated. Digital pictures would even be better. I think tomorrow I will post the flanges and bracket I am talking about so that everyone knows what my concerns are.

Keep me posted.

Thanks

The OEM units are as you describe. The generic ones just have a pipe to pipe fit.

Well the pipe and cat from autozone have the flange and the gasket you're describing (direct fit, not universal). I was also going to do stainless mandrel bent route (including headers) but in a moment of practicality and impatience (I want to get it on the road) I cheaped out, and got everything from autozone.

Anyway the way I see it; the original exhaust lasted 15 years, so how cost effective is stainless really? By the time I got done buying stainless I'd be well over double the $240 (roughly) I spent for the whole system. Stainless Cat was about $170, "cat back" was $250 (muffler and tail pipe) and the front pipe was about $70. And as you're finding out, these are a bit generic (the slide in connection at the front of the cat instead of the square flange).

The front pipe and cat that Autozone carries (37.99 for the pipe, 74.99 for the Cat. aluminized and not mendrel bent) have the square flange. The Cat comes with the metal gasket. All the aftermarket "performance" systems I checked were slide in like you're talking about.

I don't think the Jeep 4.2 is really restricted much on the exhaust side, for the low RMP range most of us are probably using it in.
