258 Rebuilt longblocks.

My 87YJ's engine is tired. Blowby, burning oil and low compression on a couple of cylinders.

Everything else is on the engine is pretty good though.

I am thinking about getting a rebuilt longblock. I live in New Hampshire, but I'd rather have one from a place that does a lot of them rather than someone local.

Anybody have any experience with a place they'd recommend?

for some reason the part # wont pull up on their web page their number is

800-745-5337 and the part number is 51107.xxx

the .xxx represents which block you need...it doesnt differentiate the blocks so you will have to tell them which one you need... hope this helps

I am thinking of rebuilding one myself. Partly to replace my engine with

200K miles on it, and partly to learn how to rebuild engines. I figure there probably is not an engine easier to work on that the 258. Who has done a rebuild and point me to so good information of where to get started, what to expect, and how much a self build will really cost?

The quality there is mediocre. I bought my rebuild from them, and the first one they sent had a bad cylinder (about 100 PSI is all it could build up). They ship you another before you have to ship the bad one back, but it's still a pain to pull that engine again...

Other than that, their customer service was good. No complaints there at all.

I learned a long time ago that you are better off with a junkyard pull than most commercially overhauled auto engines. If you want to rebuild it yourself (farming out the machine work) it's educational and enjoyable but the first time cost for tools can be high and the learning curve is definitely there. It's always better to buy a runout junkyard core (or a whole vehicle but not a Jeep) and rebuild that instead of your existing engine as long as the old one runs at all.

Apparently it's no big deal to convert a electronic 4 liter to distributor and carb if you don't want to go the electronic route.
