4WD light

I 'think' the switch is on the firewall with only one vacuum line going to it.

More then likely, the switch is bad, but you might want to make sure it has a good ground.

My brother and I both have the same problem. It does not intefer with the operation of the 4-wd system.

The swtich for the light on a '90 is on the firewall, in '91 the switch is moved to the actuator on the axle. The older style has 3 vacumn lines on the actuator, the newer style has 2 vac lines and 1 wire. The older style is triggered off manifold vac when the axle is physically locked.

I generally find that more often the switch is good, but that you are likely to have the axle stuck in the engaged position. This is NOT the same as stuck in 4wd since the transfer case goes to 2wd.

You can check things out by pulling the line off the axle and checking to see if the yellow and green lines have alternating vac when you shift between 2wd & 4wd.

The shift motor is leaking causing vacuum to be present at the switch all the time. Looks like I'll be getting a new motor.

Good advice.

If you don't want to buy the kit, it's pretty easy to rig up a cable pull yourself. I used an old PTO cable, a scrap of plate, a bolt, a small hose clamp, and four nuts:
