So I'm getting my Altima's brake's done this morning (300.00 with a change in Serp Belt) and I see across the street a Body/Paint shop. So I find out the Altima's going to take longer than I can wait so I hoofed it home and picked up the jeep. On the way back I stopped in the paint/body shop for an estimate on my YJ half doors. I bought the doors used for my 83 CJ7, they are red while the jeep is black.


597.84 to paint these doors black. YJ half doors, no repair work, just prep and paint.

I only paid 250.00 for the doors so that's over double the price I paid for them.



Aye yai yah. Guess I need to research prep and paint proceedures for a DIY paint job.

What's wrong with the red and black combo? There's a Jeep here ...white with red doors ...looks kinda neat actually and it stands out (in a good way). I could see if you had a red Jeep with green doors or some other ugly combo ...but red and black should work.

To prep (assuming existing paint isn't peeling and no repairs required):

  1. Remove any trim or decals.
  2. Clean with soapy water, let dry.
  3. Mask off uninvolved areas.
  4. Sand lightly with 400 grit paper until gloss is gone.
  5. Remove masking
  6. Wash all dust away. Let dry.
  7. Mask off uninvolved areas. Use automotive-grade tape.
  8. Wear a quality respirator.
  9. Spray on paint evenly. Release the trigger when changing directions.
  10. Let dry.
  11. Remove masking, reapply trim.

Best if you use a professional quality paint gun, but you could probably get away with rattle cans. You're just gonna scratch it all to hell on the trails anyway, right?
