79 CJ5 with 258 cylinder head bolts

Hello,

I am looking for a 79 258 head bolt/stud kit for my 79 CJ5. Does anyone know where I can get those ? I looked at the hesco website, they seem to have a head bolt kit for all 258 engines.

However I looked at my engine and it seems that studs are used (on one of the studs a idler pulley bracket is mounted) So it looks like I actually need studs. (I didn't look under the valve cover, but I assume there are studs there instead of bolts too ?) Or are both used, headbolts (on the passenger side) and studs (on the driver side) ?

thanks,

Ron

I believe what you are seeing are headbolts with top studs attached. They have a formed nut for tightening them down and a stud top for accessories and for the large washer-nuts used to hold the edge of the valve cover down with. The back one is also used for the mesh ground strap that connects the head to the firewall.

Well, you bitched about the hijacking of threads by others in a non-Jeep fashion. It's more than clear to me that you are nothing more than a troll trying to stir things up again.

Adios amateur!

PLONK!

Hi Mike,

No the valve cover has it's own bolts. I looked at it closely, on the driver side they seem to be all studs with nuts on them (I didn't look under the valve cover), they are not just bolts with a stud on top for mounting accessories.

The 1/2" kit is commonly available, however the 7/16" kit isn't ?

If I knew the lengths etc used I can probably have ARP or make me a set of head bolts/studs. (I have a guy at Hesco look into finding me a set too.) I just wondered if someone knew of a place where to get them.

The ones on my 78 engine's drivers side look exactly like you are describing and are one piece with no nut or a captured formed nut. My

86 engine was the same.

They sure 'look' like studs though, just no nut comes off...

Here is one place that sells both:

Hi Mike,

Right... actually I talked to a guy from Hesco, 4wd hardware recommended them. I also read everywhere that 1/2" headbolts were use through 1980 and 7/16 after that. The guy from hesco told me that the top part has different threading than the part that bolts onto the block.

So I ordered the 1/2" ones. He said he could find me bolts I need in case I have the 7/16 ones.

The head and valve cover came in today can't wait to get started.
