87 YJ Firewall vent or hose. What is it?

Is it near the heater box? It could be a drain for the AC.

It is the drain for the heater intake. Maintenance is to make sure that it is free of dirt, leaves, and other junk. If it gets clogged, water will come into the passenger/driver area. The one I have angles straight down, and ends in a pinched-off affair. This is supposed to let water out, but prevent exhaust and fumes from entering.

He said it is 1.75" in diameter, that is the size of a radiator hose.

It is also the size of the drain from the air intake box that sits in the middle front of the cowl under the windshield.

Thanks all. It is the air intake vent.

I should have said, by very short I meant an inch or so. Also that it was open ended.

Is it supposed to have a cover or screen on the end? Mine is just open.

There should be a flexible down tube that ends by the starter.

Yep, and with the end broken off, there is some chance that you could be sucking exhaust or other fumes back into the passenger compartment. I would recommend buying a new one, for whatever exhorbitant price the dealer wants for it. I can't really think of a way to make a replacement. The special end, that is supposed to let water out, but nothing back in, is the hard part. Maybe it's not that expensive at the stealership...

The only thing that I have ever seen, that even comes close, is the rubber drain or manual purge valve, that you will see on farm equipment or truck air cleaner canisters. If I really wanted to make one, I think that I would start with a mountain bike inner tube. The size isn't so much related to questions of flow, as it is to the pieces of dust, leaves, and other junk what will inevitably collect in the air box, and wash into the tube. I discovered after owning the Wrangler for a year or two, that "maintenance" of this item consists of pinching the end, so that these bits come out. I don't think that it is mentioned in the manual anywhere. It is just something you think of, when you see the drain tube.
