I would appreciate any help or advise that anyone could give me to fix this problem I'm having with my 89 Cherokee. My blower fan works on High speed only and not at all on the lower speeds. Would this mean my switch is "bad" or the resistor needsreplacing? Is there any way to fix/clean the switch short of replacing it?

That is a cooked resistor pack.
It is located under a plastic cover down by the passenger's feet. Just follow the 3 or 4 wires running there, they will lead to it.

I had the same problem on my 96 cherokee took it to the dealer while it was still under warranty and they replaced the switch. But theres probably a difference between the 89 and 96 Cherokees.

Could be switch or resistor pack... you'll have to troubleshoot it. Easiest would be to pull the resistor pack and examine it... basically pieces of coiled nichrome wire. The wire should be solid; you should get low ohms with an ohmmeter check.
Some resistor packs have a temperature limiting fuse, if the pack gets too hot, the fuse opens and voila, you need a new pack. Bypassing the fuse to repair the pack is not for the faint of heart. __ Steve .
Well, I found the problem. It was the resistor pack. Got one from the dealer today for $17 and some change. Installed it and voila, I have a multi-speed blower once again! Awesome! Thank you so much for your help with this!

I think if you run the heater on recirculating air too long, it can overheat the system, but you could have a good point about an old motor starting to draw too much.
Our motor went that way and killed the switch. It melted it down. Resistor pack stayed ok.

FYI, I also had to replace the blower within the past week. For a few months before I owned the XJ, you would run the blower and could here a bearing/grinding noise coming from the blower. Maybe this helped the resistor pack to an early grave??

Very likely. As they wear out, they draw a lot of power and generate heat in the lines.
