That doesn't make any sense as the tranfer case is independant of the transmission. Failure to go into gear can be all sorts of things.
Is it a standard or automatic transmission?
manual trans guess i was little unclear trans goes into gear in all drive
12345 etc. but rev will not pull vehic, will make grinding noise similar to say a stripped gear but cant b because works fine in 4lo and as u say trans is unrelated to t-case.. My only guess is a linkage prob on t-case not allowing to make transition between 2wd and 4hi.. If trans had issues wouldnt have rev at all....
In that case I'd suspect the clutch is shot. 4lo requires less torque to turn and therefore less power through the clutch and transmission.
I would be looking at the tranny and engine mounts very carefully, especially the drivers side engine mount.
When one of these goes bad or loose, it can shift the tranny physically so the shifter hits the body. When you go to 4 low, the extra torque twist can be just enough to let reverse slip in.
This goes double if you have a body lift on it.

Jan/06Fill the clutch reservoir with brake fluid, then find it's leak inside the firewall from it's push rod or from the slave drip at bottom of bellhousing. You don't have one of those funning body lifts that shifted blocking the linkage? God Bless America, Bill O|||||||O mailto: snipped-for-privacy@aol.com
What said but it might also be a failure to quite grab high range, the grinding noise might be the transfer case hi range shifter dog. There is an adjustment on the 4wd shift lever that should fix that.
Also, check the gear lube level and quality > cstaylor via CarKB.com wrote:
