My temp gauge has begun to intermittently go to zero. Is this a sign that the sending unit is going out or more probably one of those bad electrical connections these vehicles are know to have?
Where is the sending unit located?

Road Toad did pass the time by typing:
Zero usually indicates a loose wire or the second ice age.
Oddly, that depends on the engine. :)
However, probably on the water pump housing.
