My A/C takes a really long time for it to start blowing cold. I bought a recharge kit with a guage and hooked it up to the low side expecting to see it indicate a low refrigerant condition. Instead, it looked like it was really high and dropped into normal when the compressor kicked on. I didn't add any refrigerant. The compressor seemed to cycle pretty frequently. The days are starting to get hot and humid here in Louisiana and I need some relief... Any help would be appreciated.

More than likely your cooling coil has much stuff covering it, dirt, mold, and crud. Buy some coil cleaner at an HVAC commercial business. I usually get underneath spray it up into the drain and rinse several times with water. Wear safety goggles and you will be really surprised at what flushes out.
