ABS light

I recently got a 96 Cherokee Country, and seem to have a quirk in the ABS system. I drove to Buffalo for Christmas, and when I ran through a snowy parking lot in 4WD, the ABS indicator light came on. It did this a few times over the weekend. Then today, I went to the car wash to hose off all the road grime, and the indicator light came on again.



My first thought was that snow was in the wheel, mucking with the sensors, but that can't be right since I hosed everything out today. Anybody else have insight?

The ABS light means that the system is out of service. Typically this means that a wheel sensor has stopped sensing the speed of that wheel. But, it could mean that the solenoids in the valve body that routes the brake fluid is sticking. If a wheel speed sensor is failing, the sensor costs a few bucks, but the valve body is about $1200. (In my BMW, the wheel sensors run $93, and the valve body is ver $1200.) The diagnostic port should be able to tell which sensor is going south, so you do not have to buy sensors and replace them until the light goes out.

It's also an indication that the ABS computer connector or wheel connectors are full of crud and the connection needs to be cleaned. I've had this happen three times in the ZJ. Just remove the connector, shell, spray with cleaner, glop on some dilectric grease, and slap it back on.
