Axle problems -- Help again!

00 XJ LTD popping issue continued:

The popping is getting far worse. Much louder and doesn't wait for the axle to warm up. New developments:


  1. The shoes weren't touching the drums.. fixed that. Sprayed some silicone lubricant on the drum components to get them lubed up. Didn't help.


  1. Drove up and down the street and can barely hear it outside the cab. Easier to hear with the windows up.

  2. Had my wife drive past me while stopping so I could listen (hmm.. should've had that insurance policy cancelled..). She couldn't get it to repeat and I couldn't hear it.


  1. I actually climbed in the cargo area with the liftgate up (Darwin awards, here I come) and had her SLOWLY drive down the street and stop while I hung my head out the back. Only heard one pop, and more heard it coming from under the cargo area than from the back. Sounded like it was concentrated on the driver's side.



That's all I could get. The axle shaft on the driver's side moves in and out (heard that's normal on the 8.25) AND up and down a bit (with a clunk). Does that mean the bearings are bad??? How much is that to get fixed??

It doesn't pop except when stopping (I can't guarantee it's the axle.. that's where the sound is coming from, though). I'm positive the limited slip has the friction modifier -- I put it in myself.

Should the axle shaft move up and down (just a tiny bit) when I pull up on the lugs?

Could be the brakes I guess. Wouldn't surprise me, really. They did a horrible job -- front and rear. The fronts still squeal like crazy, but I haven't had the time/money to get them fixed (I don't do brakes, as you can tell).

So that up/down movement (no micrometer needed) is a sign of something? Maybe it has nothing to do with the popping, but could have something to do with other issues...

I hate to do it, but I'll probably just drop it off at Brake Check or something close to the house later this week. It HAS to get fixed SOON. Thanks again for the help, Bill.

propshaft? Driveshaft? Fine I guess. Although, on my TJ I have a bit of play (turning, not in-out) in it. Is that bad??

Rotors were warped, which toasted my "new" pads. The rear drums needed turning, and the rear end just needed a good cleaning/adjustment.

The guy says the front shocks are making the popping noise. Doesn't make a lot of sense. I know they're beat up (the rear one has already blown the seal), but didn't think they could "pop". Besides, I'd SWEAR the popping is coming from the rear. Anyhow, tried to sell me Monroe Sensatrac shocks. Said no thanks, but took the brake work.

Guess I'll be ordering some DT3000's tonight. Wanted to get this fixed before the weekend, but probably won't get the shocks before then. Do you guys really think shocks are the issue? She needs them anyway, so it isn't a big deal to buy them -- just was trying to hold out as long as possible.

There could be a slip joint on the propshaft or driveshaft. If the grease has dried out in it is will clunk or pop like crazy.

Oh, that's also why it didn't make noise when you were in the rear, the driveshaft compressed from the weight moving the sticking point.
