There should be no lateral play (up-down, left-right) in the pinion shaft of a Dana 30, should there? :-/

No, if there is, the pinion bearing is shot.

Worth a try. A member of my off-road club suggested this as well. Did you mean "crush strength," in reference to the collapsible spacer? It moves a tiny bit in and out, but more up/down/side/side.
