The 4.0 Renix fuel injection system (non carbureted) used both an EGR valve and a knock sensor from introduction in '87 through 1990. Using a knock sensor to adjust the timing of a mechanical/vacuum advance distributor is a little difficult.

Those knock sensors are on a Jeep WJ 4.7L V8, not like my 4.0L I6. I know the V8 has knock sensors. Beats me why the I6 doesn't have any....

Well, I had assumed that Mr. Hughes did at least have a modicum of knowledge concerning jeeps.

It looks to me like Chrysler managed to hit their federal emissions numbers without an EGR and knock sensor, and probably saved a couple of dollars per unit by omitting the parts and the factory labor to install them.
