The Castrol R oils are castor-based lubricants containing specially selected additives to prevent rapid deterioration through oxidation. In the majority of cases, the well-known and widely available brands of Castrol Formula R Synthetic, TXT or GP50 motor oils are entirely satisfactory for racing. Most modified and tuned production vehicles will operate perfectly well on these high performance lubricants. Castrol R grades have also proved successful in some competition manual transmission applications where normal 4- stroke engine oils are recommended. While it is difficult to define where Castrol R grades would be preferable to the use of one of the Castrol Synthetic or fortified mineral oils, for racing and high speed rallying Castrol R does provide close to the ultimate in lubrication. If high performance, coupled with reliability, is the aim, then the extremely high film strength of Castrol R will provide a valuable `margin of safety' at ultra-high engine speeds and temperatures. The use of Castrol R grades usually results in a distinct and very pleasant exhaust odour.

Castrol R40 Castor-Based Racing Lubricant Castrol R 40 is formulated to have a strong affinity to hot surfaces and provides superior oiliness for racing engines. It also contains special additives to combat oil thickening.

  • Benefits - Provides a powerful oily film at high engine speeds and temperatures - for maximum power output - Excellent load carrying reduces wear even under extreme riding conditions - for maximum engine protection - Multifunctional - also provides excellent performance as a gear oil.
  • Application Castrol R 40 has been especially developed for car and motorcycle racing and is equally suitable for two-stroke and four-stroke engines.
  • When used in four-stroke engines, the oil should be changed before each race and is intended for continuous use only. Drain intervals should not exceed 1,600 kilometres. The oil should be drained out between races and the engine should preferably be replaced by conventional engine oil before storage. It is recommended that the engine be drained and flushed before Castrol R 40 is refilled and used.
  • Castrol R 40 is also applicable in two-stroke engines for pre-mix lubrication at the fuel / oil ratio recommended by the engine manufacturer. Two-stroke engines should be stripped and cleaned after each use.

Castrol today is a brand name and has nothing to do with Castor Oil....except Castrol R, which is castor oil. Note you have to personally import it because Americans are too stupid to refrain from putting it in their car engines along with regular oil. You have to drain and refill before every race or run.

For many decades the fine-scented castor oil flavoured the racing paddocks everywhere from Assen to the Isle of Man, from Brooklands to Monza.

Castrol became involved in motorcycle racing soon after organised competition began in the early 1900s. The official Motorcycle championship would not begin until 1949, but the world's most famous brand of oil was there in the thick of things more than 30 years before.

Castrol was a mainstay of racing in the inter-war years as the oil of choice for privateers and factory teams alike. As racing on two wheels established itself, most of the winning machinery had Castrol inside it.

With the start of the official World Championship after the Second World War, Castrol was used by such marques as Gilera and Norton. It was a time of thundering single-cylinder four-strokes up against a handful of exotic multi-cylinder machines like the Gilera ridden by triple champ Geoff Duke, and its spiritual successor, the dominant MV Agusta used by legendary multiple champion John Surtees.

Glow fuel is METHANOL, NITROMETHANE, NITROBENZINE, and CASTOR or SYNTHETIC OIL. No gasoline or other petroleum distillates are used ever. Many now run on straight methanol and oil.

What led you to this imaginary idea?

Sounds a tad exaggerated but I did try "gasohol" (10% mix) in a bike I had. Ran ok but got 10% poorer gas milage so I suspect the alky didn't burn at all. Worse, my bike stalled when I switched to reserve after a couple fills of the mix, leaving me stuck in the sticks. The alchohol had mixed with a tad of water and the whole mess (about a gallon) had precipitated out into an unburnable mix in the bottom of my tank. I've avoided it like the plague ever since.

We used to use methanol in race bikes year ago but they needed close to 15:1 compression ratios to burn it efficiently. EPA won't let car mfgrs do that cuz the nitrogen in the air "burns" at those ratios making nitric oxide - one of the worst parts of SMOG. Thats why they made mfgrs cut compression ratios back in

1970.

Trucks do pay higher taxes but not enough to compensate for the damage they do to roads. Blame Nixon. The interstates were designed to support a given weight and trucks were limited to 60,000# IIRC so as not to exceed that even if slightly overloaded. When Nixon ordered 55MPH the industry hollered so he upped the limit to 80,000. That flexes the roadbed too much creating breakup and rapid wear. You can see the damage as tire-size ridges on asphault interstates - asphault simply cannot support the weight.

In fact, CA wants to figure out a way to track the mileage of cars so that they can get more money out of the hybrid owners at the pump. Of course no one likes to have to pay more than someone else. But then again, no one likes to be subsidizing someone else, either. Your trip ticket might have been paying part of the share of those with the tag.

Depending on whose ax is being ground and whose ox is being gored, one big truck causes the same amount of pavement wear in one trip as somewhere between 5,000 and 20,000 passenger vehicles.

Of course like so many other things, it all depends. In this case it depends on tire pressure, axle loading, axle spacing, suspension type, lane wander, cross-section pitch, highway type, highway age and other things. Surprisingly, GVW doesn't matter as much as axle load. What matters is how many pounds of weight are where the tire meets the pavement.

It's really much more fun on in bumper-to-bumper traffic on slick roadways at 70 MPH in a 5-ton truck -- with an axle width just a few inches narrower than all the big trucks run.

Not any glow fuel I ever used. Typically alcohol, sometimes with a bit of nitromethane and an oil. The older ones definitely used castor oil, which had pretty much a smaller but similar effect as the aircraft castor oil did on older pilots. Aka why there was always an outhouse near the landing fields.
