I wound up having to pull my Father-in-laws F350 superduty out of a snow bank with my S-10. I still give him a hard time bout that one.

I tried pulling a FedEx 18-wheeler out of some New Orleans mud with my XJ... Ok, to be more precise, I hooked up to him and then ended up dragging myself to him no matter how many blocks I put in front of my tires...

No programmers there. I'm going to try and stay with software engineering, even as an officer..

At jeep jamboree last year, the 2 rubicons had a hard time keeping up with all the YJs and TJs in lo range, they could go anywhere, just not very fast.

They must have had auto trannys. I can put my CJ in 4th gear 4:1 low range and stay with the others (what have you to say about that Nathan and auto proponents?).

Jim, driving in 4th gear at speed in 4Lo is REALLY REALLY REALLY bad for the gears inside the transfer case. That whining you hear are the gears spinning way faster than they were ever designed for.

I can't give an exact speed but if conditions are good enough that you can drive faster than 2nd gear in 4Lo, I'd shift out of 4Lo. When the t-case gears start whining loudly, it's time to get out of 4Lo. :)

We're not talking about a great amount of speed here, when in 3rd or 4th gear low range, I travel at similar speeds to stock cases in 1st gear. Once we get moving (beyond the obstacle that required low to begin with), then yes I come out of low range... like you say I have to.

As you and Nathan have said, I need to try an auto on the trail, so I may speak from experience.

i find the 4 to 1 ratio to be to low for most anything other than rock crawling. for rock crawling the 4 to 1 is _perfect_, but its just to low to use in most other situations. an auto or manual in front of the 4 to 1 isnt going to make a bit of difference when the transfer case gears are whining from being spun way to fast.
