How is the fuel filter changed in a 2000 XJ with an automatic trans & 4.0L HO? Thanks, as always, for your insights.

it's part of the fuel filter, inside the gas tank...
It can't be replaced without dropping the tank?

That is likely one of Chrysler's 'improvements'.
The older Cherokees had a filter on the inside frame rail just in front of the tank on the drivers side.
The older Cherokee also has the pump accessible from the front of the tank so you didn't need to drop it to change it.
I have no idea what the new ones have in either case.
