As I started to leave my house today in my '96GC, when shifting out of park into drive I noticed a pronounced "clunk", something out of the norm. Got to work, no problems, later started to leave for errands, noticed a "thumping" sound as I left the parking lot. It almost sounded like driving on a flat tire. Stopped, got out and looked........no flats. Continued on notice the thumping sound for about 30 yards then it stopped. I have since gotten under the GC and looked around, not noticing anything apparent that might be broken. Anyone have suggestions or ideas of what might be going on?????? Maybe a "U" or "CV" joint??????

A clunk when going through Reverse to Drive is fairly normal. A bad CV joints will pop when you make turns. Could be a U joint in the drive. How is your tranny and transfer case fluid and levels?
No problem in 4wd.
The model year 1996 Grand Cherokee did have a problematic part that holds the shifter up. When you shifted from park to reverse it would make a pop or clunk. Some drivers noticed their shifter went crooked over time. So instead of pulling the shifter straight back, it went at an angle.
If you hear the noise while driving, it is probably a U-joint. Does the sound get worse in 4 wheel drive?
